Driving Instructor in Larkhall

Driving Instructor

What Is A Driving Instructor?

A driving instructor provides lessons to people who want to learn how to drive a vehicle, in most cases a car, and in other cases it can be an HGV lorry or motorbike. They’ve undergone specific training and gained the necessary qualifications to teach people aged 17 or older (sometimes younger if it’s a specific course on private grounds) how they can drive safely and with confidence on public roads.

Their main responsibility is teaching their students the rules of the road and how to drive a vehicle safely and responsibly. This can include things like basic vehicle control, traffic rules and driving regulations, hazard perception, and defensive skills. The main goal of this, in most cases, is to prepare you with the necessary skills to pass your practical test, which ensures you have the required abilities to drive on public roads safely and responsibly.

If you want to become an instructor in the UK, you’ll need to pass some extensive training and testing. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is the Government body responsible for regulating and accrediting instructors and schools in the UK. Overall, a driving instructor plays a huge part in helping students learn to drive safely and with confidence.

What Qualifications Do Instructors Have?

It’s no surprise that instructors are held to some pretty high standards, after all, they’re tasked with teaching people who are young and inexperienced, and when you mix this with the dangers of the road, it’s not a great recipe! So, they have to know exactly what to do to make sure that you’re safe and confident on public roads, not only to yourself and the instructor, but also to all other vehicles and pedestrians.

The list of qualifications instructors can and should have are:

  • A fully valid driving licence held for a minimum of 3 years.
  • A clean criminal record to make sure they are suitable for working with young and vulnerable people, such as learner drivers.
  • Registered as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). To get this qualification, they must pass a 3 part qualification, which involves a theory test, practical test, and an instructional abilities test.
  • Approved Driving Instructors (ADI’s) need to take a professional standards check every four years to make sure they are providing students with high-quality instructions.
  • Have the correct insurance cover to teach learner drivers in their car.
  • Continued Professional Development (CPD): Instructors are highly advised to take ongoing CPD to keep their skills and knowledge relevant to current laws and regulations.
  • Code of Conduct: A driving instructor must comply with the DVSA’s code of conduct, which contains rules on professional conduct, ethical behaviour and safety.
